How a renovation runs

A clear order of works, start to finish

  1. Measure and plan

We visit, measure, talk through layout and finishes, and help you check with a building surveyor whether a permit is needed.

  2. Quote and schedule

You get a written quote and a plan for the order of works, including when water or power will be off.

  3. Strip-out and rough-in

Old fittings come out, then plumbing and electrical rough-in and any framing repairs.

  4. Waterproof, tile and fit

Wet areas are waterproofed, then tiling, cabinetry, fixtures and painting.

  5. Final check

Final clean and walk-through together, with anything on the list fixed before we finish.

Cost factors

What affects the cost?

We don’t publish one-size-fits-all prices, because two jobs that sound the same can be very different. These are the things that move a quote up or down.

  • Moving things around

Keeping plumbing and walls where they are costs less than moving a shower, toilet, sink or wall.

    Big influence on cost
  • Fixtures and finishes

Tiles, tapware, benchtops and cabinetry range widely in price, and it’s your choice where to spend.

    Big influence on cost
  • What’s behind the walls

Older homes can hide water damage, old wiring or uneven floors that need fixing first. Homes built before 1990 may also contain asbestos, which must be identified before strip-out.

    Big influence on cost
  • Size of the room

More floor and wall area means more tiling, waterproofing, paint and labour.

    Some influence on cost
  • Structural changes

Removing or moving a load-bearing wall needs engineering and usually a building permit.

    Some influence on cost
  • Access and living at home

Apartments, upper floors or staying at home during the works can change how the job is staged.

    Some influence on cost

Every job is quoted in writing, so you know the scope and price before work starts.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can’t see your question? Get in touch and we’ll answer it directly.

Do I need a permit to renovate a bathroom or kitchen?

Often you don’t need a building permit to replace a kitchen or bathroom without structural changes, but plumbing and electrical work must be done by licensed plumbers and electricians. Moving walls or changing the structure usually needs one. Our permits guide explains more.

Can I stay in my home during a renovation?

Usually, yes. For a single room we plan the work to keep disruption low and tell you in advance when water or power will be off. For a kitchen we can talk through ways to manage without it for a while.

Do you only do full renovations?

No. As well as full bathroom, kitchen and laundry renovations, we take on painting jobs inside and out, and smaller updates to existing rooms.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Melbourne?

It depends mostly on whether plumbing moves, the fixtures and tiles you choose, and what we find behind the walls. We don’t publish one-size-fits-all prices. Our renovation costs guide explains what drives the price.
